Why Your Dentist Can Be Harmful

I thought I was doing the right thing by visiting the dentist so often during pregnancy and breastfeeding.  I was wrong.  It's like playing the game Russian Roulette.

Throughout both of my pregnancies, I visited the dentist every four to six months for cleanings.  Hormonal changes wreaked havoc on my teeth and gums, and when I was almost nine months pregnant with Kate my dentist discovered several cavities that needed to be filled.

I had, up to that point, only one cavity in my entire adulthood, but I did have eight existing amalgams that had been in place since my childhood.  They'd been there so long, in fact, that can scarcely remember having them filled.

During this particular visit to my dentist, when I was informed of the bad news, I passed out in the office.  I fell flat on my face in the waiting room and still have a scar on my knee to prove it.  Apparently, being inverted and on my back in the dental chair for a prolonged period was not good for my blood flow.  At the time, I joked that it was the news of my dental caries that caused me to pass out.  I went home and didn't reschedule until Kate was eight weeks old.

If I Had Known Then What I Know Now

I would not have gone back to that dentist.  In fact, I wouldn't have gone back to any dentist.  I was breastfeeding Kate and if I had known, I would have waited until I stopped nursing Kate to have any other dental work done, including routine cleanings.  That's how dangerous dental work can be.

Let's Look At Some Facts

Mercury Is A Neurotoxin
  • Dental amalgams are made up of about 50% elemental mercury and other toxic metals such as silver, tin and copper.
  • Mercury leeches from existing fillings into your bloodstream from the moment they are put into place.
  • Mercury from the mouths of pregnant mothers has been shown to cross over to the placenta, to the developing fetus.
  •  Mercury can cross the mammary gland and into the breast milk of a nursing mother.  This poison then enters the nursing baby's bloodstream and developing organs and tissues.
  • Mercury has been implicated in all kinds of damage to babies and children, including fetal malformations, neurological damage, immune system dysfunction and Autism Spectrum Disorders. (ASD)
  • Mercury has also been cited as a cause of infertility.
  • There are lawsuits pending all over the country about mercury damage from dental work.
  • Mercury poisoning has been implicated in causing autism and autism spectrum disorders. (ASD)

When I did go back to the dentist when Kate was just weeks old, I informed the dentist and her staff of the fact that I was breast feeding.  I was extremely worried about how the novacaine would affect Kate.  The staff assured me that they'd use the smallest dose possible and said it was local so I shouldn't worry.

That day I had four amalgams removed and replaced with composite material.  I went back about a month later and had two more amalgams removed. I still have two left in my mouth.

This is good news.  The bad news is, most people don't even know there's a proper protocol for the removal of dental amalgams.  These dentists are well aware of just how toxic mercury is, and have  joined together to inform people of the dangers.  The International Academy of Oral Medicine and Toxicology (IAOMT)  is a group of dental, medical and research professionals dedicated to spreading the word about dangerous dental practices.

Begin by watching the video clip on the IAOMT site titled, Smoking Teeth = Poison Gas.   You may be running to your dentist to have him remove those amalgams (if, of course, you aren't pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or breastfeeding.)

The dentist I currently see will not even allow his hygienists to go near the amalgms that are still in place.  When Kate finally stops nursing, I am going to have these two removed.  But this time I'll have an oxygen mask on so that I'm not breathing the mercury vapor, I'll have a dental dam placed in my mouth so that I'm not swallowing chunks of the poisonous metal, and I'll take a chelating agent afterward to help my body get rid of the poison I've subjected it to.
